Something I love to do is theatre sound. i love doing this because the stress, tension, smile on peoples face’s, usually the parents sooo proud of the kids, but also because of what its taught me!
When I was about to turn 21 I was asked to do a show for a local dancing school, which I usually engineer for, and turned it down because of studies and the fact the opening night was on my birthday. The morning of the opening night of the show, the producer and director of the show (the same person in this case) rang me in tears, practically begging me to do the show because the guy they had in to replace me was ruining it for her. So being a man who can’t say no, I cancelled my night out and went to work.
On arrival I was met with the happiest women I’ve ever come across. With a bottle of verve clique and a envelope of cash (payment guys!! Nothing dodgy!!). The guy who had been doing the show turned up not soon after I started fixing his useless patching, mic placements and we got in to a heated argument. He was telling me he was a studio engineer of X amount of years and he wouldn’t have some little toe rag tell him how shit he was and why he was making the mistakes, and the mess he had created. He stormed off and the show went a head near perfect.
The next day I turned up to find the desk had been tampered with and my script and notes were all missing. How petty!! The moral to this is that I learnt a lot about my self and my ability not only to do something I love well, but the feeling of being in demand.
